Million Dollar Ideas
September 10, 2010 – Meyer Memorial Trust just announced the first phase of outcomes in ideas4oregon on its website:

July 14, 2010 – Submissions to Meyer Memorial Trust’s Ideas4Oregon campaign are now closed, but you can still browse the ideas.
The campaign came about because Meyer Memorial Trust wanted to help change the contagious pessimism in Oregon and jumpstart action that would again make our state a place where ideas begin and grow. But we needed your help. We asked you to tell us what you think is the most pressing issue facing Oregon that an investment of up to $1 million from MMT could provide meaningful support and leverage over the next two years. We wanted you to give us your best ideas about the form that support and leverage might take and closed submissions July 13, 2010.

Mobile incentivized spay/neuter programs
Provide a mobile spay/neuter vetrinary facility that can travel to different cities and counties in Oregon and support local rescues, shelters and human societies to end pet overpopulation. Pet overpopulation is a problem affecting areas all over oregon and costing taxpayer $ and tremendous amounts of volunteer hours and dollars. It is, however, a problem that can be solved so that resources can be redirected to other areas where we have more need. This is a long term investment that will pay off for Oregon over and over.
The concept:
Shelters/Rescue organizations can apply for van to be in their… more1 vote -
Mechanization for Farmers
Help farmers stop hiring illegal immigrants by helping them purchase machinery or creating programs for college and high school kids to return to doing agricultural labor they once did.

Help families keep their children in proper clothing and shoes!
During these economic times it is difficult enough to provide childcare, food and shelter for our children. Add to that - they are growing like weeds and it is costly even when shopping at Goodwill/Salvation Army or clearance sales at various department stores. How about creating a place much like "Gifts in Kind" where Oregonian businesses donate their surplus of household items to local non-profits to dispurse to those in need at little to no cost. Encourage and show them that a collaboration between family, neighbors and friends can provide good quality clothing for their growing children. Find a way… more

Change attitudes to unwanted pets and disposable life
Help reduce the tens of thousands of unwanted pets euthanized in Oregon every year. Educate people and their children on compassion. Compassion is not selective. You cannot only care for people or only care for animals. You have to care about both to truly have compassion. Cruelty and uncaring in a society are part of why we don't help our neighbors in times of need. It's built in to our flawed fabric. If we tackle some of the "accepted" cruelties allowed by our society and try to correct them, we will in turn improve ourselves as human beings, as well… more

Encore Fellowships
One of the greatest resources in our area is the pool of unemployed and retired professionals, including many skilled managers. I suggest the $1M be spent offering these people fellowships to bring their expertise to the non-profit world. HP among other corporations have done this; by investing the $1M in this way MMT can find corporate partners to also contribute. See www.encore.org for examples.

To create a series of free community spaces devoted to creativity and intellectual curiosity.
By creating spaces that are free of any political, religious, or social affiliations, Oregon can help to address the following concerns:
1. There is a severe lack of free public space in the United States, even in “weird” places like Portland.
2. Most people are living insularly, whether they intend to or not. People are seldom challenged by the differing beliefs and ideas of others. It is an unfortunate “convenience” of our society that we are all able to surround ourselves with people just like us, and to ingest the newssources that best represent our own worldviews.
3. Even like-minded… more

Anti-virals from Oregon's native plants
Certain plants native to Oregon have the potential to provide new anti-viral pharmaceuticals.
Determine how these native plants can be cultivated in Oregon.
Confirm and characterize the anti-viral activities of plant extract fractions.
Determine the concentration and composition of the plant's chemical ingredients with anti-viral activity.
Find and increase plant germplasm with high content of the chemicals of interest.
Find financial partners to fashion highly active pharmaceutical derivatives and initiate animal testing.1 vote -

Pay Us For These Million Dollar Ideas
While it is noble for people to contribute ideas for no compensation, I believe that you are likely to get greater participation and more quality ideas by rewarding great ideas with MMT money.
I see three top ways to encourage participation. The first two ways are contest-oriented. Number one is a prize awarded by the MMT for the idea it judges to be the best. Number two is an award for the best idea as voted by the Oregon public. The third means of encouraging participation is a flat-out sweepstakes wherein a winner is chosen at random from all contributors.

Non-Profit Research and Innovation Center
Create an endowed Non-Profit Research and Innovation Center that provides free or reduced cost consulting services to Oregon non-profits to enable them to work more strategically and effectively. The center would offer access to high quality research to inform non-profit planning and strategies. It would also provide a space for "big-picture" thinking that would enable non-profits to work collaboratively and across sectors to have the greatest impact.

Help change Oregon demographics!
Currently Oregon is being driven into this misery by an older generation who complains and will not support change in Oregon. If MMT funds could go to create a giant civic's lesson for our Seniors. Do some great comparsions on what percentage of the average workers salary went to build the schools, infastructure and systems that our now falling down around us and that the senior population won't support. I think with education and a push to make Oregon a state friendly to families and not the haven of cranky old people who want everything cut but their social security.

Regional, National, and Global Campaign to Secure Out-of-the-state Monies to Support Ideas4Oregon.
MMT would plan and implement process to secure external monies (e.g., grants, loans, gifts, bequests) from key sources (e.g., Export-Import Bank of the United States of America, The World Bank, ShoreBank Pacific) to support Oregon initiatives generated through Ideas4Oregon process. Greg Hansen.

Summer “CCC” work for young people.
Young people need to feel useful and the state’s parks have fewer personnel to maintain them. Paying young workers with the supervision of Park Service or Camp Hosts would help keep parks looking good and the kids could earn some money and learn about working.

Identify and promote collaborative opportunities
Put together a team of research geeks (like me!) to compile a database of services and programs available in Oregon. Make that info available in an EASY to read format. THEN identify the overlaps/duplicates and bring together organizations providing duplicate services in a format that encourages collaboration, or even combining to be ONE organization instead of two (or ten).

redefine this contest
Although I hope the one or two really visionary yet practical and financially feasible ideas for effectively leveraging $1M are in here somewhere, the noise is somewhat overwhelming to a casual observer like myself. In my opinion, the best ideas come from people with a vested interest in seeing them through. That interest may not be purely wealth but for recognition and for responsibility in bringing the idea to fruition. So there may be some reluctance on the part of people with really good ideas to post them in such a public forum. This is a noble experiment, but the… more

Teach Everyone Problem-solving Skills
I have an idea for a website that would provide everyone in the state with problems to practice solving in groups. Teachers could use it and so could businesses to sharpen skills and promote team work. People could talk to each other in person, instead of texting, and learn the power of group creativity and problem-solving.

Support spay and neuter programs for nonprofit cat shelters
Spaying a female cat at a vet costs $200 and neutering a male while costing less is still expensive. Many people can't afford this and as a consequense a lot of cats are not fixed. This leads to many unwanted kittens entering shelters and if they are not adopted they are put to sleep. Spay and neuter programs also help control veral cat colonies.

Catalyst and Clearinghouse to Pursue All Entries for Ideas4Oregon.
MMT initiate and facilitate process of inviting and involving all public, private, non-profit organizations (including other foundations) in Oregon to evaluate, select, and/or pursue (individually or collaboratively) all ideas generated through MMT’s Ideas4Oregon. The rationale being that Oregonians are generating and submitting many ideas that can make a big impact in our state. MMT is encouraged to share the list with other organizations and work together to ensure as many ideas as possible are transformed into actions that benefit Oregonians.
