July 14, 2010 – Submissions to Meyer Memorial Trust’s Ideas4Oregon campaign are now closed, but you can still browse the ideas.
The campaign came about because Meyer Memorial Trust wanted to help change the contagious pessimism in Oregon and jumpstart action that would again make our state a place where ideas begin and grow. But we needed your help. We asked you to tell us what you think is the most pressing issue facing Oregon that an investment of up to $1 million from MMT could provide meaningful support and leverage over the next two years. We wanted you to give us your best ideas about the form that support and leverage might take and closed submissions July 13, 2010.

Develop a proposal to have the FCC give all community cable access TV stations a digital broadcast s
Community TV stations are an asset that we need to keep developing. And I think a great way to support and grow this creative community would be to give them a digital broadcast signal. I get all kinds of stuff now, yet I'd really like it if I got my community cable access station over the air also. This would be a win win situation for everyone. New TV talent could be experimented with and developed on a wider level, creating a larger dialectic which inspires creativity, which is a good and valuable thing for most people.

Positive Focus News
Create news providers that report with a positive bent and don't focus on negative sensational stories or present with personal bias. We need a balance to all of the negativity that the public is constantly bombarded with.

Create a state-level quality, investigative news service to improve civic involvement/understan
It could be a state replication of the national nonprofit news service ProPublica or linked to it since one of the founding editors is a former Oregonian investigative editor Stephen Engelberg. We need better informed constituents in this state so we are better prepared to tackle all the challenging issues facing us. We need an objective, professionally vetted source of information and news that can fill in for diminishing print media/newspapers and be accessible through electronic and social media. A state version of ProPublica could be seeded with MMT funding (as the national model is by national foundations) with part… more

Start Spreadin' the News
Amongst my friends and in my profession, as the business manager of a local staffing agency, it seems the biggest local agent of pessimism is unemployment. All we seem to hear about are companies downsizing, relocating, and closing. But there are local companies surviving and even thriving in this economic downturn.
Let the light in by promoting successful local businesses in the media, perhaps in the Oregonian or in local tv/radio segments. Sponsor stories and ads for companies that are increasing local jobs, utilizing local vendors, and overall benefiting Oregon's economy. It's great advertising for those businesses and gives the… more

Support for "genuine" journalism
Be great if the million dollars could be spent putting some spine into PBS, NPR and OPB to the point where they can actually address the fundamentals of America's many pressing problems and the truths behind what is really causing them!
Those genuine journalists who actually did this like Bill Moyer have now been lost and in any case their shows were often relegated to bad time slots. But fortunately there is still Fresh Air and Frontline who can rattle the bars on occasion with some serious reporting and interviewing over key issues.

Grant Money to Independent News Organizations
Information is the lifeblood of both markets and democracy. A free press is essential to the functioning of both. Salem-News.com is a well established independent news source serving Oregon. They have published many ground breaking stories on vital issues that other news organizations won't touch. Recent exclusives include a series on corruption in the DOC, an expose on the illegal activities of a major corporation operating in Oregon, and ongoing coverage of crucial environmental issues. Salem-News.com is veteran owned, and has many contributing writers who are veterans, providing a unique and essential viewpoint that is missing in much of the… more
