Million Dollar Ideas
September 10, 2010 – Meyer Memorial Trust just announced the first phase of outcomes in ideas4oregon on its website:

July 14, 2010 – Submissions to Meyer Memorial Trust’s Ideas4Oregon campaign are now closed, but you can still browse the ideas.
The campaign came about because Meyer Memorial Trust wanted to help change the contagious pessimism in Oregon and jumpstart action that would again make our state a place where ideas begin and grow. But we needed your help. We asked you to tell us what you think is the most pressing issue facing Oregon that an investment of up to $1 million from MMT could provide meaningful support and leverage over the next two years. We wanted you to give us your best ideas about the form that support and leverage might take and closed submissions July 13, 2010.

Concept Proposal: A simple system to reduce industry's carbon "tiretracks"
Global greenhouse gas emissions are forecast to increase by 25 percent by 2015. In the Northwest, food processing companies spend $8 billion annually transporting their products, including thousands of truck trips and billions of pounds of atmospheric carbon. Yet research shows that more than 20 percent of those truck miles are partial loads or empty backhauls. An innovative concept, the “Green Shipper” transportation program, demonstrates that dramatic CO2 emission and energy reductions are possible through a collaborative approach to logistics.
Phase I Green Shipper program research was subcontracted in 2009 to an Oregon-based small company entrepreneur, through a $140,000 grant… more

Fees for users of bikes
Fees support addition of safe bike lanes and classes in schools on safe riding.. Bike license plates would deter unsafe riding by providing a means of identification.
Another similar idea to require licenses and plates for bikers:
We could be one of the first in the nation to test, license and plate our bikers in Oregon in order to bring them fully into the daylight of being a legal part of the road. We could charge a small fee for testing, a small fee for licensing, and a small fee for plating a bike. Oregon police could effectively ticket bikers… more1 vote -
Study ideas for better intermodal rail/truck transportation of goods
Fund a study for a plan to use intermodal container transport, making it available in small communities, where a small single axle truck can access ocean containers from a local rail siding in each town.
These can then be returned for shipment, to be sent to any ocean port, or to anywhere by rail throughout North America.
This should greatly reduce truck traffic, and energy use, especially in our urban areas where the Ocean ports are located.1 vote -

Tunnel to Bend
You want big and bold ideas?
Let's spend a million bucks to do a very good engineering study of building a tunnel from Nimrod (east of Eugene), under the mountains, to Bend. Then, if it is possible, build the tunnel; it would be 50 miles long.
This will help unite the state, make Eugene and Bend transportation hubs, encourage tourism, etc.
As JFK said about going to the Moon, we should do this, "not because it is easy, but because it is hard."1 vote -
Elevated High Speed Rail in Cascades
An elevated track through areas of the state with high snow fall during the winter months. Economically, this would also make for a more reliable future high speed freight system and it would be the first of its kind over long distances, so local engineering and construction firms could sell their skills worldwide.

JPods Networks
CSX Railroad commercials note "Our trains move a ton of freight 423 miles on one gallon of fuel."
JPods networks are ultra-light computer controlled overhead railroads from which robotic vehicles move people and cargo at 260 passenger miles per gallon, without the gallon. Solar collectors mounted over the rails gather 10,000 to 20,000 vehicle miles of power per mile of rail per day.
Networks are very scaleable. They can start as small as 100 yards connecting wings of a hospital complex and grow to cover whole cities displacing about 70% of oil-powered transportation.
Cost per mile is $5 to 12… more

traffic controle
make smart speed signes for freeways similar to europe but signes that drop speed limit to as low as 5 mph to reduce stop and go traffic. This system would constently very the speed to maximize amount of traffic moved. This system would also have smart lights that sence the traffic volume through cameras and magnetic sensors. Currently most stop lights only take into account stopped traffic but not moving traffic.
Companies should be persuaded to promote working from home 1 or 2 days a week. Carrot and stick approch should be used in form of taxes/tax breaks. Companies should… more

Mass transit plan for the Willamette Valley.
Most mass transit plans for Oregon are centered around the Portland metropolitan area. There are smaller transit services in other cities in the Willamette Valley, but they are typically uncoordinated and poorly served. By developing a plan for all the different transit agencies, it would be possible to better serve small communities in the Willamette Valley.

Make a demo system for RUF (www.ruf.dk)
The climate problems and oil price problems cannot be solved with the current transportation system. Even electric cars are too energy consuming and public transport is too inflexible.
RUF is a system combining train efficiency with car flexibility.
RUF also solves the battery problem.
RUF has a small test track in Denmark which has been shown on CNN (www.ruf.dk/cnn.doc)
RUF need a larger test track. It could be placed in Oregon.
Many american experts have recommended RUF.

Convert Downtown to Bike/Pedestrian/Max Only
Downtown is a place full of angry drivers who are confused, lost, or otherwise trying to make it through downtown in a hurry.
Provided all of the events friendly to foot traffic, we need to eliminate private vehicles. There is already an infrastructure of park & rides in place. This would also free up much needed Real Estate currently used as parking structures.
I'd like to see Portland mimic the bike friendly atmosphere of Copenhagen, where there are free bikes conveniently located around downtown for visitors and residents to use. This infrastructure would be far less to create than the… more1 vote -
Bicycle Rental Kiosks in Portland, Ashland, and Corvallis
Similar to inexpensive bicycle rental kiosks in Paris (Ve'lib), Lyon (Ve'luv), and other European Cities, create the opportunity for people to rent bicycles for as little as $1 or less per half-hour, with return kiosks available in popular areas. All that is required is a credit card deposit held by the electronic check-out kiosk. This program would require both an initial investment, plus ongoing support. However, Paris is funding their program by linking advertising to the bicycles to pay for bicycle repair and kiosk upkeep...
