July 14, 2010 – Submissions to Meyer Memorial Trust’s Ideas4Oregon campaign are now closed, but you can still browse the ideas.
The campaign came about because Meyer Memorial Trust wanted to help change the contagious pessimism in Oregon and jumpstart action that would again make our state a place where ideas begin and grow. But we needed your help. We asked you to tell us what you think is the most pressing issue facing Oregon that an investment of up to $1 million from MMT could provide meaningful support and leverage over the next two years. We wanted you to give us your best ideas about the form that support and leverage might take and closed submissions July 13, 2010.

Create an Oregon Writer's Project
Similar to the Federal Writer's Project that put thousands to work during the Great Depression, the Oregon Writer's Project would provide a creative outlet and income for hundreds of unemployed workers. Participants would be sent into their communities to engage in conversations and conduct interviews with everyday people. Their writing would be published on an Oregon Writer's Project Website, in physical books and small zines/pamphlets, as well as in e-book form, with all proceeds returning directly to the writers/workers. These works would help create dialogue and community between a wide swath of Oregonians who wouldn't otherwise interact.

Bring Oregon together through video
Give out 5000 flip video cameras to people throughout Oregon, with the stipulation that they make videos about their community. They can interview senior citizens, catch their community doing good things, document things that need to be changed, show what they appreciate about our great state. Have a website that they can upload to with a map that shows where they filmed what they filmed. We would know our state and the people in it so much better if we had a place and means to capture our stories!

Support Independent Filmmakers!
I have had an idea for a totally unique and original web series for quite some time. I can't share the concept (for fear of it being stolen...), but would be prepared to share the concept in a private setting. The money would be spent 100% in Oregon to pay the salaries of top local cast and crew, on caterers and craftspeople (carpenters, stylists, costume designers, etc.). And the concept would put Oregon in the forefront in the creative arena of web series development.

First National Satellite Museum
I once thought East Coast bias only applied to sports, but now I realize that it encompasses another large part of our nation. The majority of our country’s treasures reside on the East Coast, housed in the Smithsonian Museums, the National Gallery, and the National Archives. A significant portion of our population is never able to see these priceless artifacts that define our nation because they are so far away.
The problem is merely a geographical one, and could be remedied by several satellite museums dotted across the nation. These museums would house a portion of our nation’s collections for… more1 vote -

Employ thousands long term in proud creative work by revitalizing public-works basaltic stonemasonry
Various stone-wall-makers in the Portland area have created a livelihood building for homeowners; some of their work is elegant, some of execrable design. But the sort of grand and exquisite stone-wall and stone-embankment building that dominated Oregon public works in its heyday in the ‘20s is just no longer done. It is not for shortage of basalt blocks; it is because nobody considers it practical. But while practicality has been substituted for anything resembling beauty (read concrete), the suspicion lingers that the economics of revitalizing grand stone-embankment building might be more positive than meets the eye. Take $1 million; spend… more

Support the Digital Revolution!
Revolver Digital Media Studio, LLC... (Revolver DMS) has created a highly innovative business model for serial web television which, if successful, will serve as their vehicle into the film industry. According to the Oregon Film Office in 2007 the film industry in Oregon made a direct impact of $ 709.6 million in output, $294.3 million in wages and business income (labor income) and 6,325 full- and part-time jobs. Compared to 2002, output increased 64 percent, wages increased 55 percent, business income was up 50 percent and employment increased 21 percent. A breakout of the direct impact from the indigenous films… more

College Internships in the Film Industry
I want to create a non-profit production company that offers established professionals as mentors to film students. It will also promote Oregon as a destination for major film studios and tourism.

Healing Native American Veterans
Making art is therapeutic. It is a healthy outlet to express ourselves and, in many cases, say creatively what we can not or choose not to articulate aloud. Art also builds communities and connects us to each other and our environment. It can ground us to our very core and help build bridges at the same times.
Native American veterans have a long history of fighting for this country. Many Native American men and women were fighting for the armed forces even before the United States considered them to be citizens in 1942. With the MMT funds, let us create… more

Eastern Oregon Magazine
Part feature, part literary/art magazine, to explain and explore the east part of the state in order to bridge the divide that is always being talked about. It will give authors, photographers and artists a chance to reflect the beauty and interest of the dryside, and be a place to explain the history and integrity of the ecology of the bigger half of the state

Present an inspiring homegrown musical comedy to colleges and cities around the state for free
A close-to-completion musical comedy that seeks to inspire people to take action now to make the world a better place, "Planet Eden" can be performed at venues around the state. It's theme is just this: "stop acting like the end of the world is coming and do something!" The show is accompanied by an exhibit featuring materials from a wide variety of Oregon-based nonprofits and associations where people can volunteer and start making a difference, both locally and statewide.
